2 women join in the spiritual embrace of Yogasutra to celebrate the coming of the 2012 Mayan Apocalypse. They follow the commands of a sensory environment of light, sound, digital imagery, and kinetic sculpture that is manipulated by 2 voyeur controllers. The performers beckon demonic spirits as they reach deeper into an alternate reality. What transgresses is recorded by web cameras affixed to the women’s heads and streamed live to the online video chat community, Tinychat.

//We performed for 3+ hours for Open Studios in the context of post-Hurricane Sandy to feel closer to the storm that seemingly affected everything around Pratt Institute–but not itself. The performance borrows from common celebratory rituals born in American universities and builds them into a contemporary ceremony for the coming of the ancient Mayan apocalypse on December 21, 2012//

“I once had a vision on ayahuasca that time-space flowed in the shape of a coiled torus (think of a slinky with both ends connecting) with the entire length of the coil being also coiled (now imagine the slinky is made out of a really long spring). The whole thing was immense compared to me and glowed with white light against the empty space that it floated in. It glowed not on its own accord, but because souls made of light were jumping in and out of it, at every point on the surface, like glowing trout trying to make their way upstream. Each time a soul splashed down back into the time-stream they would live through an entire life, and upon death they jumped back out and landed in a different spot. In that vision i lived through several life times and remember it being exhausting because there was was no end to experience, yet my soul wanted rest.”

Viral Shadow [short video documentation]

–one part mirrored mosaic tunnel / one part digital + mechanical shadowroom–

//Viral Shadow invites visitors to step into an immersive, alternate space that mimics a wormhole escape from reality. Combining the magical, mysterious, and horrific, Viral Shadow–a full-on sensory public spectacle. Visitors first enter through a dark, velvety curtain. The tunnel is cave-like and fully covered with tiled and distorted mirrors. The space is crystalline with mirrors, dark but glowing with colored light at the other end. Wind in the entryway creates an ethereal atmosphere. // Upon entering the other side, one is confronted with a spidery, human-scale robot of a microscopic Virus. A human spider silhouette rapidly crawls from wall to wall. Grating sound reverberates throughout the room, echoing out into the tunnel. Foggy vapor immerses the visitor’s surroundings, taking on the appearance of a mysterious gas. After one has fully traversed the wild wormhole, they exit back out into their former reality.
